A day in the life of Gambrinus

Behind the scene of a Lisbon Institution!

Tucked away in the heart of the city, this place isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a culinary institution with more stories than your Portuguese grandma’s recipe book.

Step inside and you’re whisked back to a time when dining was an art form. Picture this: vintage decor that oozes old-world charm designed by Portuguese architect Maurício de Vasconcelos in 1964, a vibe so cozy you’ll want to move in, and the aroma of sizzling dishes that could tempt a vegan.

But hold onto your appetite, because Gambrinus isn’t just about food. It’s about vibes. The kind of place where the staff knows your name (and your favorite wine) and where the ambiance makes you want to linger longer than a Portuguese siesta.

The Bar: the spot to be

You might easily walk past this hidden gem without noticing it—unless there's a line of people waiting for one of its 12 coveted stools. If you're lucky enough to snag a seat, you'll find yourself in a unique space that operates almost independently from the rest of the restaurant.

Sit at the bar, and you'll be welcomed with a small dish of roasted almonds and a plate of rye bread slathered with butter, on the house. Though a menu is available, the most legendary items at the bar aren't written down. Among these are the famous croquettes.

Part of the bar’s charm is the performance aspect, indeed you can watch the cured ham cut right in front of you or the dishes finished right at the counter. Also a siphon coffee maker, adding a mad scientist-like flair to the coffee-making process.

At Gambrinus, the bar is not just a place to grab a drink; it's a culinary haven where guests can indulge in some of Lisbon's most beloved gastronomic delights.

The croquettes

Gambrinus's croquettes apart is their use of 100 percent beef and the fact that they are always served hot, a notable difference from most croquettes in Lisbon. Additionally, diners can choose from four types of mustard, showcasing the delightful touches Gambrinus is famous for.

These croquettes are the ultimate comfort food, the result is a crispy exterior giving way to a melt-in-your-mouth filling bursting with savory goodness.

The prego

Indulge in a quintessential Portuguese culinary experience with Gambrinus' legendary prego sandwich.Crafted with the utmost care and attention to detail, the prego sandwich at Gambrinus is a symphony of savory delights. The tender beef steak marinated to perfection in a blend of garlic, spices, and olive oil is nestled between two slices of freshly baked Portuguese bread, lightly toasted to golden perfection.

But what truly sets Gambrinus' prego sandwich apart is the attention to quality and craftsmanship. Each ingredient is carefully selected to ensure the utmost in flavor and freshness.

Whether enjoyed as a quick bite at the bar or as a hearty lunchtime treat, it's the perfect way to experience the flavors of Portugal in all their glory.

Is one of Gambrinus signature dish. Delicate crepes, crafted with precision and finesse, are enveloped in a luscious sauce made from caramelized sugar, butter, and freshly squeezed orange juice. As the sauce gently simmers, it infuses the crepes with sweet and tangy flavors, creating a unique sensation of happiness.

But the magic doesn't stop there. At Gambrinus, presentation is just as important as taste. The Crepe Suzette is prepared tableside, where diners can witness the culinary spectacle unfold before their eyes. With a flourish of flames, the sauce is ignited, sending mesmerizing flickers of light dancing across the dining room. It's a sight to behold, a moment of pure theater that elevates the dining experience.

Whether enjoyed as the perfect ending to a leisurely meal or as a decadent treat to satisfy your sweet cravings, it's a must try.
