Cantina das Freiras

No one would have guessed that one of the city's best river views can be found in a canteen. Known as the Nuns' Canteen, it's located in Palacete O'Neill, the headquarters of ACISJF, an association dedicated to supporting the underprivileged, and it's still a well-kept secret among Lisbon's Chiado regulars. On the terrace, which is always packed at lunchtime, less than 30 people can fit in, and sometimes you have to wait, tray in hand, for a table – it's worth it. There are always three dishes of the day, all unpretentious and Portuguese-inspired.

Fun fact. It's one of the (already few) places in Lisbon where you can still get a good meal for around 10 euros.
